Are you converting your contacts from social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn into real living breathing customers? If you use social media to network and prospect, then you need to know the best way of meeting your new (and old) friends IRL (in real life, as the kids say).
“Computers don’t buy homes, PEOPLE do! Meet people.” – Grant Schultz
Here’s how to get started, get involved, and GET NOTICED as a Rock Star of social media in your market!

A “TweetUp” is an informal meeting of Twitter users. Sort of a ‘We know each other online, but lets get together to meet in person’ event. It’s perfectly suited for you to get to know other social media users in your local area, and grow your network.
The whole point of using social media for business is to grow your business, so take the natural next step and convert your virtual acquaintances to IRL (in real life) Friends!
Starting or attending a TweetUp in your area to get connected with the REAL PEOPLE who use social media is the REAL WAY to grow your business. Instant, attainable, measurable results. (new friendships and commissions)
A TweetUp is simply a local ‘MeetUp’ for people who use Twitter! You meet the people active on Twitter in your area, and get a great way to network with new people in a ‘Real Life’ setting.
TweetUps are typically spread through the use of hashtags. The ‘#’ symbol is appended to the start of whatever phrase you assign to your hashtag. Keep them short, memorable, and simple. For example, you may tweet:
“Starting a TweetUp in Madison – Let’s get together for the #MadisonTweetUP on Jan. 27th!”
Twitter users can then see who else is tweeting about the #MadisonTweetUp just by clicking on the term. This is how memes get spread on Twitter. (You may recall seeing the trending topics on the right sidebar of Twitter, many of these terms use hashtags.
You could preset a location for your new TweetUp, or determine one based upon feedback received from your Twitter community. I encourage you to take the lead as much as possible and cement yourself as a tech-savvy community leader.
How do you find people on Twitter in your area? Go to http://search.twitter.com Click on ‘advanced search’ and then search for people by location. Type in your zip code and a reasonable search radius, and boom, there you go.
